Pro Tips For Using Apps That Turn Photos Into Drawings

Knowing how to turn a picture into a drawing involves more than applying a sketch filter. Anyone can open a photo and tap a filter icon. But it takes more skill and vision to create a high-quality work of art.

Apps That Turn Photos Into Drawings

If you’re going to use apps that turn photos into drawings, it’s important to know how to create stunning images.

Here are five pro tips for getting the best out of your favorite picture to drawing app:

1. Use A Photo With Simple Composition

Sketch and drawing filters tend to work best on photos that are quite simple in composition. If there’s too much detail in the photo, your subject might become lost when you apply a drawing effect.

You’ll get the best results with photos that have good contrast between light and dark areas.

Apps That Turn Photos Into Drawings

2. Choose A Filter To Suit The Subject

Always choose a sketch filter that suits the subject and enhances the mood of the photo.

A lone tree in a barren landscape probably won’t look good with a colorful cartoon filter. A moody black and white pencil or charcoal sketch is more likely to suit this kind of subject. By contrast, a photo of happy child is likely to suit a more vibrant drawing style.

Apps That Turn Photos Into Drawings

3. Customize The Drawing Filter

Rather than just tapping a sketch filter and saving your photo, play around with the custom settings. This allows you to fine-tune the drawing effect, creating a more unique piece of art.

Most apps have the option to change the filter strength. This lets you reduce the intensity of the drawing effect. A sketch effect should always enhance the original image, not overpower it.

Most drawing apps have general editing tools for adjusting color and brightness. Other settings might include paper type and color, thickness of pencil/brush strokes, shadows, and other details. Some apps even let you erase the sketch effect from part of your image.

Apps That Turn Photos Into Drawings

4. Save At The Highest Resolution

When saving your creation in a photo sketch app, be aware that some free versions save at a lower resolution. This means the final saved image will be smaller than the original photo. Low resolution images are often fine for sharing online, but they won’t look good printed.

If you want to print your images, it’s worth paying the in-app fee so that you can save at the highest resolution.

Apps That Turn Photos Into Drawings

5. Remove Watermarks

Some free versions of drawing apps add a watermark when you save the image. Watermarks detract from the beauty of your picture, and they ruin a printed image.

You might not mind a watermark if you’re just experimenting with the app. But if you want to print or share your artwork, pay the in-app fee to remove the watermark.

iPhone Photo Apps: Which Ones Do You Need?

There are many different types of photo apps available for iPhone. But there are only three types that you’ll need on a regular basis:

  • Photo editing app
  • Camera app
  • Photo sharing app

Photo editing apps and photoshop apps allow you to edit photos on iPhone after you’ve taken them. With just a few basic editing tools you can turn an ordinary photo into a stunning masterpiece.

Photo Apps

While the iPhone’s built-in Camera app is fantastic, sometimes it doesn’t give you enough manual control. For example, you can’t adjust shutter speed or ISO.

If you want DSLR-like control over the iPhone camera, you can download a third-party iPhone camera app.

Once you’ve shot and edited some amazing photos, you’ll probably want to share them with others. A photo-sharing app lets you showcase your photos to family, friends, and even strangers across the globe.

13. Limitations Of The iPhone Photos App

1. Ensure Your iPhone Is Updated To iOS 13

The built-in Photos app is one of the best photo editing apps for iPhone.

And with iOS 13 (iOS is the iPhone operating system), you get a completely redesigned photo editor.

iPhone Camera

The new Photos app has a wider range of editing tools. And you can fine‑tune your edits with more precision than before. You can even edit videos using the same tools that you use to edit photos.

To ensure you have these new iPhone photo editor tools, make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS 13.

To update your iPhone to iOS 13, open the Settings app from the Home screen. Then go to General > Software Update.

iPhone Camera

If your software is up to date with iOS 13, you’ll already have access to the new photo editing tools.

iPhone Camera

If your software isn’t up to date, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the latest iOS 13. (Before doing this, it’s a good idea to back up the data on your iPhone – just in case something goes wrong during the update process!)

Note that if you have the iPhone 6 or earlier, you won’t be able to update to iOS 13. And therefore, you won’t have access to the new editing tools in the Photos app. You can still use the old editing tools though – you just won’t have as many tools to work with.

2. Duplicate Your Photo To Preserve The Original (Optional)

When you edit a photo in the Photos app, the original image gets replaced by the edited version.

However, editing in the Photos app is non-destructive. This means you can undo edits or revert back to the original image at any time.

But sometimes you might want to keep the original photo, along with a separate edited version. If so, you can easily duplicate the image before editing.

To duplicate an image, open it in the Photos app and tap the Share icon at the bottom left. Then scroll down and tap Duplicate

iPhone Camera

Tap the Back arrow at the top left to return to your photo library.

iPhone Camera

The duplicate image will appear at the bottom of your photo library. You can edit this image while the original remains unedited.

Read on to learn how to edit photos on iPhone using the built-in photo editor tools.

3. Open The iPhone Photo Editor In The Photos App

So, how do you open the photo editing tools in the iPhone Photos app?

Just open the photo you want to edit, then tap Edit at the top right of the screen.

iPhone Camera

In the iPhone photo editor, there are three icons at the bottom of the screen. Or if you’re editing a Live Photo, there will be four icons.

iPhone Camera

These icons give you access to a range of editing tools for improving your image.

Now you’ll learn how to edit pictures on iPhone using these photo editing tools.

4. Adjust Color, Brightness & Sharpness

Knowing how to edit photos on iPhone allows you to turn an average image into an amazing one!

iPhone Camera

And the best place to start is by making a few quick adjustments to color, brightness, and sharpness.

To make adjustments to your photo, ensure the Adjust icon (dial) is selected at the bottom of the screen.

iPhone Camera

Beneath your photo, you’ll see a row of adjustment tools. Swipe across to see more tools.

iPhone Camera

4.1 Auto Enhance

The Auto tool automatically adjusts the colors and brightness levels in your photo.

Simply tap the Auto icon to apply this one-tap edit. The icon turns pale gray when it’s switched on.

iPhone Camera

The great thing about the Auto tool is that you can actually fine-tune the edits that it’s made.

You can use the slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust the strength of the edit.

iPhone Camera

You can also adjust the individual edits that have been made to color, brightness, etc. If you swipe across the adjustment icons, a bold line indicates which tools the Auto adjustment has used.

iPhone Camera

To fine-tune an individual adjustment, tap on the tool and use the slider to adjust its strength.

iPhone Camera

If you want to remove the Auto edit from your photo, tap the Auto icon so it turns dark gray.

iPhone Camera

Now, you’ll discover how to use the manual adjustment tools to make your own edits.

4.2 Exposure

The Exposure tool brightens or darkens your photo.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to brighten the image, or left to darken it.

iPhone Camera

The Exposure tool has more effect on the highlights than the shadows. This means that the bright tones in your photo are affected more than the dark tones.

4.3 Brilliance

The Brilliance tool is great for bringing out details and making your photo look richer and more vibrant.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to brighten shadows and darken highlights. If you drag left, the shadows will become darker and the highlights brighter.

iPhone Camera

4.4 Highlights

The Highlights tool adjusts the brightness of only the bright areas in your photo.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider left to make the highlights darker, or right to make the highlights brighter.

iPhone Camera

4.5 Shadows

The Shadows tool adjusts the brightness of only the dark areas in your photo.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to make the shadows brighter, or left to make them darker.

iPhone Camera

4.6 Contrast

The Contrast tool adjusts the contrast between the dark and bright tones in your photo.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to increase contrast, making the shadows darker and the highlights brighter. Or drag left to reduce contrast, making the shadows and highlights more similar in tone.

iPhone Camera

In most cases, reducing contrast doesn’t produce good results. Increasing the contrast a little can make your photo look sharper. However, you’ll often get better results with the Brilliance tool as it keeps the colors nice and vibrant.

4.7 Brightness

The Brightness tool brightens or darkens your photo. But it does it in a slightly different (and usually better) way from the Exposure tool.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider left to darken your photo, or right to brighten it.

iPhone Camera

The Brightness tool has more effect on the shadows and midtones. This means the dark and medium tones get adjusted more than the bright tones.

4.8 Black Point

The Black Point tool affects the brightness of only the darkest tones in your photo.

iPhone Camera

If your photo lacks rich black tones, drag the slider to the right to make the darkest areas appear black. Dragging to the left will make the dark areas appear faded.

iPhone Camera

4.9 Saturation

The Saturation tool makes the colors more vibrant or less vibrant.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to make the colors more vibrant, or left to make the colors more muted.

iPhone Camera

In most cases, increasing the saturation a little bit will make your image “pop.” But be careful not to over-saturate the colors. If you make the colors too vibrant, they won’t look natural.

To create a black and white photo, set the Saturation to -100.

iPhone Camera

4.10 Vibrance

The Vibrance tool makes muted colors more vibrant without affecting skin tones or saturated colors too much.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to boost the vibrancy of muted colors. Or drag it left to reduce the vibrancy.

iPhone Camera

The Vibrance tool usually produces more natural-looking colors than the Saturation tool. This is because it doesn’t over-saturate skin tones or colors that are already vibrant.

4.11 Warmth

The Warmth tool makes the colors in your photo warmer or cooler.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to make the colors warmer (more orange). Or drag it left to make them cooler (more blue).

iPhone Camera

You can use the Warmth tool to correct the color balance of a photo. Or use it to change the overall mood of an image.

4.12 Tint

The Tint tool allows you to add a green or magenta color tint to your photo.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider left to add a green tint, or right to add a magenta tint.

iPhone Camera

The green tint is great for increasing the vibrancy of green leaves or fields. Just be aware that it tints the entire photo, so all colors will be affected.

4.13 Sharpness

The Sharpness tool sharpens detail in your photo by making edges crisper and more defined.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to make the image sharper.

iPhone Camera

Be careful not to increase sharpness too much. Over-sharpening will reduce the image quality.

4.14 Definition

The Definition tool adjusts contrast to improve the clarity of detail in your photo.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to increase clarity and definition in your image.

iPhone Camera

4.15 Noise Reduction

The Noise Reduction tool reduces “digital noise” – such as grain caused by shooting in low light. You can also get grain in your photos when editing, e.g., if you brighten the shadows too much.

iPhone Camera

If you have a grainy or “noisy” photo, drag the slider right to reduce the noise.

iPhone Camera

Use this tool sparingly as too much noise reduction will soften the detail in your photo.

4.16 Vignette

The Vignette tool darkens or brightens the edges of your photo.

iPhone Camera

Drag the slider right to add a dark vignette, or left to add a bright vignette. A dark vignette usually looks better than a bright one.

iPhone Camera

A dark vignette can help draw attention to the center of the image. It’s also great for adding a sense of drama to your photos.

5. Use A Filter To Adjust The Color Tone

Filters offer a quick and easy way to change the look and feel of your photo.

With a single tap, you can adjust the color tone of your image using a range of color and black and white filters.

How To Edit Photos On iPhone

Read on to discover how to edit photos on iPhone using the built-in filters in the Photos app.

In the Photos app Edit mode, tap the Filters icon (three circles) at the bottom of the screen.

iPhone Camera

Swipe across the filter thumbnails beneath your image. Watch how the colors change as you select different filters.

iPhone Camera

iPhone Camera

When you’ve chosen a filter, drag the slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust the filter strength.

iPhone Camera

To remove a filter, select the Original filter.

iPhone Camera

6. Crop, Rotate, Straighten & Adjust Perspective

The Photos app has a range of tools for cropping, rotating, straightening, and adjusting perspective.

To access these tools, tap the Crop icon at the bottom of the screen.

iPhone Camera

6.1 Auto Crop & Straighten

When you first open the Crop options, you might notice that your image is automatically straightened and/or cropped.

If your iPhone has applied Auto cropping or straightening, you’ll see AUTO in yellow at the top of the screen. If you don’t want to accept these automatic adjustments, tap the yellow AUTO icon.

iPhone Camera

6.2 Straighten

If your photo doesn’t look level, you can easily straighten it in the Photos app.

Tap the Straighten tool beneath the image. Then drag the slider to rotate and straighten the photo. Use the gridlines to help you get the photo perfectly level.

iPhone Camera

6.3 Perspective

Sometimes, you might want to adjust the vertical or horizontal perspective in your photo.

To adjust the vertical perspective, tap the Vertical Perspective tool beneath the image. Drag the slider to adjust the vertical perspective.

iPhone Camera

This tool is great for architecture photography. If you took a photo of a building from a low angle, the building may appear to converge towards the top. Adjusting the vertical perspective allows you to straighten up the vertical lines on the building.

To adjust horizontal perspective, use the Horizontal Perspective tool.

iPhone Camera

6.4 Rotate & Flip

At the top left of the Crop screen are two icons: Flip and Rotate.

iPhone Camera

Tap the Rotate icon to rotate your photo 90 degrees at a time.

iPhone Camera

Tap the Flip icon to flip your image horizontally.

iPhone Camera

6.5 Crop

The Crop tool lets you remove the edges of your image.

Cropping your photo is great for getting rid of distracting elements from the edges of the frame. This results in a cleaner, simpler image with a stronger visual impact.

How To Edit Photos On iPhone

You may also wish to crop your image to improve its composition. For example, cropping can help you create better symmetry or apply the rule of thirds after taking your photo.

iPhone Camera

Cropping also allows you to zoom in on a distant subject. But be careful not to crop too much of the photo as this can result in a small, low-quality image.

To crop your photo, drag the corner crop handles. A white border indicates where the new edges of the photo will be.

iPhone Camera

If you crop in too far, drag the corner crop handles out again. Or pinch inwards with two fingers to bring more of the image back into the frame.

You can also drag the image preview to adjust the position of the image within the crop frame.

iPhone Camera

If you want to crop to a specific aspect ratio, tap the Aspect Ratio icon at the top right.

iPhone Camera

Swipe across the row of aspect ratios, e.g. Square, 9:16, 8:10, etc. Then select the one you want to use.

iPhone Camera

Above the aspect ratio options, you can choose whether your photo to be cropped vertically or horizontally.

iPhone Camera

You can pinch in or out to adjust how much of the picture is cropped. And you can drag the image to adjust which area appears within the crop frame.

To exit the Aspect Ratio settings, tap the Aspect Ratio icon at the top right.

iPhone Camera

7. Save Your Edited Photo

When you’ve finished editing your photo, tap Done to save the changes.

iPhone Camera

Your edited image will appear in your photo library.

If you’d prefer not to save your edits, tap Cancel (instead of Done) in the photo editor. Then tap Discard Changes.

iPhone Camera

8. Remove Or Change Your Edits

Edits that you make in the Photos app are non-destructive. This means you can remove or change them at any time – even after you’ve saved the changes.

So if you’re not happy with your edits, you can always adjust the settings you applied. Or you can remove all edits and revert back to the original image.

To change or remove your edits, open the photo in the Photos app and tap Edit.

iPhone Camera

If you want make changes to your edit, open any editing tool and make your adjustments.

iPhone Camera

To revert to the original photo, tap Revert at the bottom right. Then tap Revert To Original.

iPhone Camera

9. Edit Portrait Mode Photos

Portrait mode in the iPhone camera app allows you to shoot photos with a beautifully blurred background.

iPhone Camera

You can edit Portrait mode photos in the same way as any other photo. But you also have some additional editing options unique to Portrait mode.

9.1 Depth Control

Do you have the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XR, XS, or XS Max?

If so, you can change the strength of the background blur in your portrait photos.

To adjust the blur strength, open your Portrait mode photo and tap Edit.

iPhone Camera

Tap the f/number icon at the top left of the screen.

iPhone Camera

Now drag the Depth slider beneath your photo. A low f/number creates more blur. A high f/number shows more detail in the background.

iPhone Camera

9.2 Portrait Lighting

Another Portrait mode editing option is Portrait Lighting (not available on iPhone 7 Plus).

Portrait Lighting lets you apply studio lighting effects to your Portrait mode photos.

iPhone Camera

In Edit mode, ensure the Portrait Lighting (hexagon) icon is selected at the top left of the screen. Then swipe through the Portrait Lighting options (cube icons) at the bottom of the screen.

iPhone Camera

Select a Portrait Lighting effect, e.g. Studio Light, Contour Light, Stage Light, etc.

iPhone Camera

iPhone Camera

Use the slider to adjust the strength of the Portrait Lighting effect.

iPhone Camera

9.3 Remove Background Blur

If you decide you don’t want the background blurred, you can remove the depth effect from your portrait photo.

In Edit mode, tap the yellow Portrait option at the top of the screen. You can switch the blur back on at any time by tapping the Portrait option again.

iPhone Camera

When you’ve finished editing your Portrait mode photo, tap Done to save the changes.

10. Edit Live Photos

Live Photos is an iPhone camera feature that allows you to capture moving images. When you shoot a Live Photo, the result is a 3-second video, complete with movement and sound.

You can edit Live Photos in the same way as regular images. But you also have some other editing options available.

When you open Edit mode for a Live Photo, you’ll see the Live icon at the bottom of the screen. Tap the Live icon to open the Live Photo editing tools.

iPhone Camera

If you don’t like the audio on your Live Photo, tap the yellow Sound (speaker) icon to switch off the sound. You can turn the sound back on at any time by tapping the Sound icon again.

iPhone Camera

If you want to convert your Live Photo to a regular still image, tap the yellow Live icon at the top of the screen. You can convert the image back to an animated Live Photo at any time by tapping Live at the top of the screen.

iPhone Camera

Beneath your photo is a row of image thumbnails. These are the individual frames that make up the 3-second Live Photo. To change the key photo (the one you see in your photo library), drag across the thumbnail slider until you find the frame you want. Then tap Make Key Photo.

iPhone Camera

When you’re happy with your Live Photo edits, tap Done to save the changes.

As well as the Live Photo settings in Edit mode, you’ll find other options by swiping up on a Live Photo in your photo library. Here, you can apply a Loop, Bounce, or Long Exposure effect to your Live Photo.

iPhone Camera

Loop converts your Live Photo into a continuous video loop. Bounce turns your Live Photo into a continuous video that plays forwards and then in reverse.

Long Exposure creates a beautiful slow shutter effect, blurring any movement in the scene. Use this setting to create stunning waterfall and river shots where the water appears silky smooth.

11. Edit Videos In The Photos App

Did you know you can now edit videos in the iPhone Photos app?

iPhone Camera

You can use all of the photo editing tools to edit videos, time-lapse videos, and slo-mo videos.

12. Benefits Of Using The iPhone Photos App For Editing

With so many iPhone photo editor apps available, it can be difficult to know which ones to use.

The iPhone’s built-in Photos app is often overlooked as a photo editor. But the redesigned Photos app in iOS 13 has a lot to offer when it comes to editing your pictures.

iPhone Camera

Depending on your editing needs, the Photos app might be all you need for improving your iPhone photos.

Benefits of using the Photos app to edit your images include:

  • No need to download additional third-party photo editing apps
  • Edit your images without having to leave your iPhone photo library
  • Suitable for beginners as well as more advanced users
  • You can change settings for Live Photos and Portrait Mode after taking the shot
  • Edits are non-destructive, allowing you to change or remove your edits at any time
  • You can also edit videos in the same way that you edit photos

13. Limitations Of The iPhone Photos App

The editing tools in the Photos app are perfect for everyday image editing. But it does have some limitations.

It’s missing certain features that you’ll find in some other popular photo editor and photoshop apps.

In particular, it doesn’t include the option to make selective adjustments to a certain part of an image. And it doesn’t have a healing tool for removing objects from your photos.

If you’re looking for a more advanced photo editing app with these tools, the free Snapseed app is a great option.

iPhone Camera

Snapseed gives you ultimate control over how to edit photos on iPhone. Yet it’s still easy for beginners to use.

Table Of Contents: How To Organize Photos On iPhone

Click any title link below to go straight to that section of the article:

1. What Are iPhone Photo Albums?
2. How To View Your iPhone Photo Albums
3. View Your Entire Image Libary
4. How To Use The Media Types Albums

9. How To Remove Photos From An iPhone Photo Album
10. How To Delete Photo Albums From iPhone
11. How To “Favorite” Your Best Photos
12. How To Manage Your Deleted iPhone Photos

1. What Are iPhone Photo Albums?

An iPhone photo album is a storage place for a particular set of images within the Photos app.

When you take a photo with your iPhone camera, the image gets stored in the Recents album of the Photos app.

iPhone Photo Albums

But the Photos app also contains other albums. And your iPhone automatically organizes your images into the appropriate album.

For example, Live Photos get stored in the Live Photos album. Portrait mode photos get stored in the Portrait album. Burst mode photos get stored in the Bursts album.

iPhone Photo Albums

The Shared Albums are for sharing your iPhone photos with others. And the People & Places albums are great for finding photos of a particular person or place.

iPhone Photo Albums

The People album uses facial recognition to group together all of the photos of a particular person. And the Places album displays your photos on a map.

iPhone Photo Albums

You can also create your own iPhone photo albums. This is perfect for organizing different collections of photos, such as landscape photos, family photos, etc.

iPhone Photo Albums

Organizing your photos into albums makes it much easier to find particular photos.

2. How To View Your iPhone Photo Albums

To find your iPhone photo albums, open the Photos app. Then tap Albums at the bottom of the screen.

iPhone Photo Albums

If you don’t see the Albums screen (similar to the one above), it means you’re currently viewing photos within one of your albums.

In this case, tap Albums at the top left to return to the main list of albums.

iPhone Photo Albums

3. View Your Entire Image Libary

Do you want to see every single photo and video on your iPhone?

Simply tap Albums at the bottom of the screen. Then tap on the Recents album.

iPhone Photo Albums

You’ll see the album name (Recents) at the top of the screen. And your images will be displayed as small thumbnails.

iPhone Photo Albums

Scroll through the image thumbnails, and tap an image to view it at full size. To return to the thumbnail images, tap the back arrow at the top left of the screen.

iPhone Photo Albums

To exit the Recents album, tap Albums at the top left.

iPhone Photo Albums

4. How To Use The Media Types Albums

Would you like to view just a certain type of photo or video?

Maybe you shot some beautiful portrait photos and you’d like to see them all in one place.

iPhone Photo Albums

Perhaps you took a bunch of panoramic shots, and you want to see which ones worked out.

iPhone Photo Albums

Or maybe you want to see all of the videos that you’ve shot with your iPhone.

Luckily, your iPhone automatically organizes different types of photos and videos into albums.

The albums are named according to the “media type,” e.g., VideosLive Photos, Portrait, Long Exposure, Panoramas, etc.

To access these albums, go to the main list of albums by tapping Albums at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down to the Media Types section, then tap the album you want to open.

iPhone Photo Albums

The example above shows images in the Portrait album. These are all of the photos that were taken using Portrait mode in the iPhone Camera app. (Portrait mode creates beautifully blurred backgrounds in your photos).

Keep in mind that all of these photos and videos can also be found in the Recents album. The Media Types albums just make it easier to find a particular type of photo or video.

5. Do Albums Use Up More Storage Space On Your iPhone?

Having images in multiple albums doesn’t use up more storage space on your iPhone.

For example, a Live Photo will appear in the Recents album as well as the Live Photos album. But it’s not taking up the storage space of two photos.

iPhone Photo Albums

The image is actually only stored once on your iPhone. But you can view it in either the Recents album or the Live Photos album.

The same goes for iPhone photo albums that you create yourself.

When you add a photo to an album you created, the photo doesn’t get duplicated and take up more storage space. The image is really only stored in one place on your iPhone, but it can be accessed from multiple albums.

6. How To Create Your Own iPhone Photo Albums

Do you want to organize your iPhone photos into different collections based on a theme?

Maybe you want to have all of your favorite landscape shots in one place. Perhaps you’d like to group all of your vacation photos together. Or maybe you’d like all of your best flower pictures in a single album.

iPhone Photo Albums

Creating your own iPhone photo albums lets you organize your images in any way you wish. And it makes it much easier to find and view just the photos you want to look at.

So how do you create your own albums in the Photos app?

First, find the photo or photos you want to put into a new album. Ensure you’re viewing the images in thumbnail view as shown below. Then tap Select at the top right.

iPhone Photo Albums

Select all of the photos you want to add to a new album. Then tap the Share icon at the bottom left of the screen.

iPhone Photo Albums

Scroll down and tap Add To Album.

iPhone Photo Albums

You now have two options:

You can select an existing album from the My Albums section. Or you can tap New Album to create a new one.

iPhone Photo Albums

If you’ve chosen to create a new album, type a name for the album. Then tap Save to add the photos to the album.

iPhone Photo Albums

To view the album you just added photos to, tap Albums at the top left. Your album will be in the My Albums section at the top of the screen.

iPhone Photo Albums

If you can’t see the album you want to open, swipe across the screen or tap See All.

Tap on the album name to view the images within that album.

iPhone Photo Albums

7. How To Change Album Name On iPhone

If you create an iPhone photo album, you can easily change the album name later if you wish.

Go to the main Albums screen (tap Albums at the bottom of the screen if necessary).

In the My Albums section, tap See All. Then tap Edit at the top right.

iPhone Photo Albums

Tap on the album name you want to change. Use the keyboard to type a new name. Then tap Done to save the changes.

iPhone Photo Albums

8. How To Rearrange Photos In iPhone Album

Once you’ve added images to an iPhone photo album, it’s easy to rearrange the order of the photos.

(Note that you can only reorder photos in albums that you’ve created yourself. You can’t change the order of photos in the built-in albums such as Recents, Videos, Bursts, etc.)

Here’s how to rearrange photos in iPhone albums that you’ve created:

Open the album you want to organize. Drag any photo to a different position within the album, then release your finger.

iPhone Photo Albums

9. How To Remove Photos From An iPhone Photo Album

Do you want to delete photos from an album you created?

If so, you have two options:

You can remove the photo from the album, but keep it in the Recents album. Or you can delete the image from both the album you created and the Recents album.

Here’s how to remove photos from an album without deleting them from the Recents album:

Open the album containing the photos you want to remove. Tap Select at the top right.

iPhone Photo Albums

Select all of the photos you want to remove. Then tap the Delete (trash) icon at the bottom right.

iPhone Photo Albums

Tap Remove From Album. The photos will be removed from the album, but they’ll still be stored in the Recents album.

iPhone Photo Albums

If you want to delete the photos from all albums on your iPhone, tap Delete on the above dialog box.

10. How To Delete Photo Albums From iPhone

You can easily delete iPhone photo albums that you’ve created.

Go to the My Albums section of the main Albums screen. Tap See All, then tap Edit.

iPhone Photo Albums

Tap the red circle on the album you want to delete.

iPhone Photo Albums

A message appears asking if you want to delete the album. But notice that it says the photos won’t be deleted.

iPhone Photo Albums

This is because the photos aren’t really stored in this album. They’re actually only stored in the Recents album.

Therefore, you can delete a photo album that you created, but the photos still remain in their original location within the Recents album.

To confirm that you want to delete the album (but not the photos within it), tap Delete Album.

11. How To “Favorite” Your Best Photos

Would you like to see all of your favorite images in a single album in the Photos app?

The iPhone makes it easy to mark your best images as “Favorites.” These images then appear together in the Favorites album.

To add a photo to the Favorites album, tap on the image to open it. Then tap the Favorites (heart) icon at the bottom of the screen so it turns blue.

iPhone Photo Albums

To view all of your Favorites, go to the main Albums screen, then open the Favorites album.

iPhone Photo Albums

If you no longer want a photo to appear in the Favorites album, tap on the photo to open it. Then tap the Favorites (heart) icon so it appears white.

iPhone Photo Albums

Please note, if you use the Delete button to remove a photo from the Favorites album, it will also be deleted from the main Recents album.

So, always unfavorite the photo using the heart icon rather than deleting it.

12. How To Manage Your Deleted iPhone Photos

Before you experiment with deleting your photos, it would be a good idea to transfer your photos from iPhone to computer. Or back them up to external or cloud storage. That way, you won’t lose any of your favorite images if you accidentally delete them.

You can use an iPhone photo transfer app to back up your photos. If you have a Mac computer, click here to learn how to download photos from iPhone to Mac. If you have a Windows computer, read our tutorial on how to transfer photos from iPhone to PC.

12.1 How To Delete Photos

To delete a single image from the Photos app, open the image and tap the Delete (trash) icon at the bottom right. Then tap Delete Photo.

iPhone Photo Albums

To delete several photos, ensure you’re viewing the images in thumbnail view (as shown below). Tap Select at the top right.

iPhone Photo Albums

Select all of the images you want to delete. Tap the Delete icon, then tap Delete Photos.

iPhone Photo Albums

When you delete photos from your iPhone, they don’t get permanently removed straight away.

Instead, the deleted photos go into the Recently Deleted album where they remain for 30 days.

Within that 30-day timeframe, you can recover photos and put them back into the Recents album. This is useful if you delete a photo by mistake!

You can also permanently delete photos before the automatic 30-day timeframe.

12.2 How To Recover Or Delete Photos From The Recently Deleted Album

To manage your deleted photos, go to the main Albums screen in the Photos app. Scroll down, and open the Recently Deleted album.

iPhone Photo Albums

You’ll now see all of your recently deleted photos. Each photo shows the number of days remaining before it’ll be permanently removed from your iPhone.

iPhone Photo Albums

Do you want to recover deleted images and move them back into the Recents album?

Start by tapping Select at the top right of the screen.

iPhone Photo Albums

Select the photos you want to recover. Tap Recover at the bottom right, then tap Recover Photos.

iPhone Photo Albums

Do you want to permanently delete photos from the Recently Deleted album before the automatic 30-day timeframe?

Select the photos you want to delete, then tap Delete at the bottom left. Tap Delete Photos to permanently delete the selected images from your iPhone.

iPhone Photo Albums

If you want to permanently delete all images from the Recently Deleted album, tap Select, then Delete All.

Table Of Contents: How To Use iPhone Camera Settings

Click any title link below to go straight to that section of the article:

1. Set The Focus For Tack-Sharp Photos
2. Adjust Exposure To Achieve Perfect Brightness Levels
3. Switch Between iPhone Lenses To Zoom In & Out
4. Use Night Mode For Unbelievable Low Light Photos
5. Blur The Background In Your Photos With Portrait Mode

7. Activate Burst Mode For Jaw-Dropping Action Shots
8. Shoot Live Photos To Preserve Those Special Moments
9. Set The Timer For Hands-Free Shooting
10. Switch On The Grid In iPhone Camera Settings For Better Compositions

1. Set The Focus For Tack-Sharp Photos

The first step to shooting stunning iPhone photos is to ensure your subject is in sharp focus.

iPhone Camera Settings

If the subject isn’t in focus, you won’t be able to capture its intricate detail.

A photo with an out-of-focus subject will look like an amateur snapshot. And it won’t have the impact you’d hoped for.

Fortunately, the iPhone Camera app makes it super-easy to set focus.

iPhone Camera Settings

But unless you know what you’re looking for, you might not even realize the camera has a focus setting.

It’s one of those hidden iPhone camera features that most people don’t know about.

So, how do you set focus on the iPhone camera?

Simply frame your shot, then tap the screen where you want to set focus. A yellow box will appear to indicate the focus point.

iPhone Camera Settings

When you take the photo, the area that you set focus on will appear crisp and sharp.

Setting the focus point is especially important when shooting close-up photos.

iPhone Camera Settings

Why? Because when the camera is close to the subject, the depth of field in the photo will be shallow.

A shallow depth of field means only a small portion of the image is in focus. Anything in front of or behind the focus point will appear blurred.

iPhone Camera Settings

Setting focus is one of the best iPhone camera tricks you can learn.

And it’s one of the easiest iPhone camera settings to use.

It only takes a second to set focus. But it will make a huge difference to the quality of your photos.

2. Adjust Exposure To Achieve Perfect Brightness Levels

Exposure refers to the brightness of an image.

If you don’t get the exposure right, your photo will either be too bright (over-exposed) or too dark (under-exposed).

iPhone Camera Settings

If the photo is under-exposed, it will lack detail in the shadows (dark areas). And the highlights (bright areas) may appear dull.

If the photo is over-exposed, the highlights (bright areas) may appear completely white with no detail at all. And the shadows will be overly bright.

Some exposure problems can be fixed in editing (such as brightening up shadows). But you’ll never be able to bring back detail in the over-exposed whites.

So it’s important to get the exposure right in the camera.

iPhone Camera Settings

Adjusting exposure is easy. But, like the focus feature, exposure is one of those hidden iPhone camera settings. And most people don’t even realize it exists.

So, how do you adjust exposure in the Camera app?

iPhone Camera Settings

First, you need to tap to set focus on your subject.

Then, simply swipe up or down on the screen to adjust exposure.

iPhone Camera Settings

Swipe up to make the image brighter. Or swipe down to make it darker.

In general, you should aim to capture as much color and detail as possible. Try to avoid over-exposed highlights and under-exposed shadows.

iPhone Camera Settings

However, in some cases, you might want to deliberately under or over-expose your photo.

For instance, to capture a silhouette photo, you’ll need to under-expose so that your subject appears completely black.

iPhone Camera Settings

Before you take a photo, always check whether the brightness levels look good.

If the image looks too bright or too dark, adjust the exposure before you press the shutter button.

3. Switch Between iPhone Lenses To Zoom In & Out

Do you have one of the dual-lens or triple-lens iPhones?

iPhone Camera Settings

If so, you can zoom in and out on your scene by switching between iPhone camera lenses.

The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have three lenses: Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto.

iPhone Camera Settings

The iPhone 11 has two lenses: Ultra Wide and Wide.

iPhone Camera Settings

Older dual-lens iPhones (iPhone XS, XS Max, X, 8 Plus, and 7 Plus) have the Wide and Telephoto lenses.

If you have a single-lens iPhone, you’ll just have the standard Wide lens.

So, how do you switch between lenses on the dual and triple-lens iPhones?

In the iPhone Camera app, you’ll see some numbers at the bottom of the viewfinder. These are the Zoom options that let you switch between lenses.

iPhone Camera Settings

0.5x is the Ultra Wide lens. 1x is the Wide lens. And 2x is the Telephoto lens.

To use the Ultra Wide lens, tap 0.5x.

iPhone Camera Settings

To switch to the Wide lens, tap 1x.

iPhone Camera Settings

For the Telephoto lens, tap 2x.

iPhone Camera Settings

You know how to switch between lenses. But which one should you choose for your scene?

The 1x Wide lens has a moderately wide field of view. This makes it suitable for most shooting situations.

iPhone Camera Settings

The 0.5x Ultra Wide lens has an extremely wide angle of view. This allows you to capture super-wide photos that include much more of the scene. It’s great for shooting wide landscapes, cityscapes, and architecture.

iPhone Camera Settings

The 2x Telephoto lens allows you to capture a closer view of distant objects. Use it to zoom in when you can’t physically get closer to your subject.

iPhone Camera Settings

As you can see, the same scene can look very different when captured with the Wide, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto lenses.

Having the option to zoom in and out allows you to be more creative and versatile when shooting.

4. Use Night Mode For Unbelievable Low Light Photos

Do you struggle to take good photos when you shoot at night? Do your low light photos look dull and grainy?

Well, if you have the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro Max, night photography will never be a problem again!

The iPhone 11 Camera app has an incredible new feature called Night mode.

iPhone Camera Settings

Night mode uses intelligent camera software to capture more color and detail in your night photos.

iPhone Camera Settings

So, how do you use Night mode on iPhone 11?

First, ensure you’re shooting with either the 1x Wide lens or 2x Telephoto lens. (Night mode doesn’t work with the 0.5x Ultra Wide lens.)

iPhone Camera Settings

Night mode will come on automatically whenever you shoot in low light.

If the light is fairly low (but not very dark), the Night mode (moon) icon will be white.

iPhone Camera Settings

The white icon means that Night mode is available to use, but it’s not yet active. To activate it, tap the Night mode icon so it appears yellow.

iPhone Camera Settings

If the scene is very dark, Night mode will activate automatically (the icon will appear yellow).

When Night mode is active, you’ll see a number on the yellow Night mode icon. This number indicates the exposure time, e.g., 1 second, 3 seconds, 7 seconds, etc. This is the time it will take to capture the image.

The Auto exposure time is the time recommended by the camera.

iPhone Camera Settings

However, you can increase the exposure time if you wish. Simply drag the Exposure Time slider right to the Max setting.

iPhone Camera Settings

If you would prefer not to use Night mode, drag the slider left to the Off setting.

iPhone Camera Settings

When you’ve selected the Night mode exposure time, tap the shutter button to take your shot.

Hold your iPhone really still until the exposure is complete. If you move the camera, your photo might not be sharp.

iPhone Camera Settings

The above photo was taken using Night mode. It was taken at night with only a couple of street lamps illuminating the scene.

For comparison, below is the same building taken without Night mode.

iPhone Camera Settings

As you can see, Night mode allows you to capture a brighter image with vibrant colors and sharp detail.

So, if you have one of the iPhone 11 models, don’t be afraid to shoot at night. You’ll be amazed at the results!

Note that if you’re shooting in medium to low light, and Night mode isn’t activated, your camera may use Deep Fusion instead. Deep Fusion is an automatic camera feature (you can’t control it) that captures more texture and detail in medium to low light scenes.

5. Blur The Background In Your Photos With Portrait Mode

Have you ever wondered how to blur the background in your portrait photos?

iPhone Camera Settings

With the iPhone camera, it’s easy. You just need to shoot in Portrait mode.

Portrait mode is available in the built-in Camera app on the following iPhones:

iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus.

iPhone Camera Settings

Portrait mode uses depth-effect software to blur the background in your photos.

This means you can easily create professional-looking portrait photos with your iPhone.

iPhone Camera Settings

So, how do you use Portrait mode?

First, swipe across the shooting modes at the bottom of the screen and select Portrait.

iPhone Camera Settings

Ensure your subject is between two and eight feet away. If they’re too close or too far away, the depth-effect won’t work.

When Portrait mode is ready, you’ll see the words Natural Light in yellow.

iPhone Camera Settings

Now, press the shutter button to take a stunning portrait with a gorgeous blurred background!

iPhone Camera Settings

But what if you change your mind and decide the photo would look better without the blurred background?

The iPhone makes it easy to remove the depth effect after taking a photo.

To remove the blurred background, open your portrait photo in the Photos app, then tap Edit.

iPhone Camera Settings

Tap the yellow Portrait icon at the top of the screen to remove the blur. You can re-apply the blurred background at any time by tapping the Portrait icon again.

iPhone Camera Settings

Tap Done to save the changes.

If you have the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XR, XS, or XS Max, you can go even further with the Portrait mode options.

On these iPhones, you can control the strength of the background blur… after you’ve taken the shot.

iPhone Camera Settings

First, you need to open your portrait photo in the Photos app, and tap Edit.

iPhone Camera Settings

Next, tap the f/number icon at the top left.

iPhone Camera Settings

The Depth slider will appear beneath your photo. Drag the slider left or right to make the background blur stronger or weaker.

iPhone Camera Settings

Tap Done to save the changes.

Portrait mode allows you to take photos with beautiful, blurred backgrounds.

But there’s even more to Portrait mode than this!

Read on to find out how to make your portrait photos even more stunning…

6. Use Portrait Lighting To Add Studio Light Effects To Your Photos

Do you want to add professional studio light effects to your portrait photos?

You can do just that with the iPhone’s Portrait Lighting feature.

iPhone Camera Settings

You can apply different lighting effects when shooting in Portrait mode. But it’s easier to experiment with the effects after you’ve taken the photo.

So, once you’ve taken a photo with Portrait mode, open it in the Photos app, and tap Edit.

iPhone Camera Settings

Ensure the Portrait Lighting (hexagon) icon is selected at the top left. The Portrait Lighting icons will be displayed beneath your photo.

iPhone Camera Settings

Swipe across the Portrait Lighting icons to see the different effects, e.g. Studio Light, Contour Light, Stage Light, etc.

iPhone Camera Settings

Use the slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust the strength of your chosen light effect.

iPhone Camera Settings

Tap Done to save your edits.

Portrait Lighting offers a powerful way to quickly enhance your portrait photos. And it can really make your subject stand out!

iPhone Camera Settings

7. Activate Burst Mode For Jaw-Dropping Action Shots

Do you struggle to take good photos of moving subjects?

Do you end up pressing the shutter button too early or too late, missing the perfect moment?

iPhone Camera Settings

It doesn’t have to be this way!

Your iPhone camera has a little-known feature called burst mode.

iPhone Camera Settings

And once you know how to use it, you’ll be able to take perfect action shots every time!

Burst mode takes around ten photos per second. This gives you the best chance of getting at least one photo of your subject in the perfect position or pose.

iPhone Camera Settings

So, how do you activate burst mode on your iPhone?

It’s actually really simple.

On iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max, slide the shutter button to the left. The camera will keep taking pictures until you release your finger.

iPhone Camera Settings

On iPhone XS and older, simply hold down the shutter button (don’t slide it left).

iPhone Camera Settings

Once you’ve shot a burst, you can choose the best images to keep and discard the rest.

To select the best photos, open the Photos app. Find your burst and tap to open it.

Tap Select at the bottom of the screen. Scroll through the photos and tap on the ones you want to keep. Then tap Done, and choose to Keep Only Favorites.

iPhone Camera Settings

Burst mode will instantly improve your iPhone action photography. You should use it whenever there’s any movement or unpredictability in the scene.

It’s great for photographing children and animals. And it’s perfect for street photography or capturing people walking, running, jumping, or cycling.

iPhone Camera Settings

8. Shoot Live Photos To Preserve Those Special Moments

The iPhone Live Photo feature brings your pictures to life by creating a 3-second moving image.

Rather than freezing a moment in time with a still photo, use Live Photos to capture movement and sound.

Press Play on the video below to see how this Live Photo captures the movement and sound of the beach.

Live Photos are perfect for preserving those special little moments that you couldn’t capture in an ordinary still photo.

Use it when photographing moving subjects, children, water, fun moments, or any scene that has interesting sounds.

To shoot a Live Photo, ensure the Live Photos icon at the top of the screen is set to on. (If the icon has a line through it, it’s off.)

iPhone Camera Settings

Then simply press the shutter button to capture your Live Photo.

Remember that the camera automatically captures 1.5 seconds of video before and after you take the shot. So keep the camera still for a few seconds before and after pressing the shutter.

To play back your Live Photo, open it in the Photos app, then hold your finger down on the screen.

In the Photos app, you can apply different effects to your Live Photo, such as Loop, Bounce, and Long Exposure.

To access these effects, open your Live Photo then swipe up.

iPhone Camera Settings

Swipe across the effects beneath your photo, and tap the one you want to use.

Loop turns your Live Photo into a continuous video loop. Bounce makes your Live Photo play forwards and then in reverse.

Long Exposure creates a slow shutter effect, blurring any movement that was captured. This is perfect for creating a silky smooth effect on rivers and waterfalls.

iPhone Camera Settings

If you’d prefer to convert your Live Photo to a still image, tap Edit at the top of the Live Photo.

iPhone Camera Settings

Tap the Live icon at the bottom of the screen. Then tap the yellow Live icon at the top of the screen.

iPhone Camera Settings

The Live Photos animation and sound are now turned off. But you can convert it back to a Live Photo at any time by tapping Live at the top of the screen.

9. Set The Timer For Hands-Free Shooting

The self-timer in the Camera app lets you set a delay between pressing the shutter button and the photo being taken.

This means you can shoot hands-free… and appear in the photo yourself.

iPhone Camera Settings

First, set your phone on an iPhone tripod (or any solid surface) and compose your shot.

In the iPhone 11 Camera app, tap the up-arrow to display more iPhone camera settings at the bottom of the screen. Then select the Timer icon.

iPhone Camera Settings

On iPhone XS and older, you’ll find the Timer icon at the top of the screen (as shown below).

iPhone Camera Settings

Select either a 3-second or 10-second delay.

When you press the shutter button, the camera will start counting down the seconds.

iPhone Camera Settings

Now you can get into position in front of the camera.

When the shutter fires, the camera will take a burst of 10 shots.

You can then choose the best photos from the sequence and delete the rest (just like you do when selecting your favorite burst mode photos).

iPhone Camera Settings

Using the timer means you never have to take a boring photo again.

You can always add interest to your photo by appearing in the scene yourself!

10. Switch On The Grid In iPhone Camera Settings For Better Compositions

Did you know you can display gridlines in the iPhone Camera app?

iPhone Camera Settings

These gridlines will help you create stunning compositions that really catch the viewer’s eye.

You can use the camera gridlines to:

To turn on the grid, open the Settings app, then select Camera. Ensure the Grid option is switched on.

iPhone Camera Settings

Close the iPhone camera settings, then open the Camera app. You’ll see two horizontal and two vertical lines in the viewfinder.

iPhone Camera Settings

Use these lines to help you position the main elements in the scene for a pleasing composition.

Position your main subject on one of the vertical gridlines (or where two lines meet) to create an off-center “rule of thirds” composition.

iPhone Camera Settings

Or align the horizon along the top or bottom gridline. This will ensure the horizon is perfectly level.

iPhone Camera Settings

And your composition will be more pleasing than if you’d placed the horizon across the middle of the frame.

So, switch on the camera grid. And start using it to compose jaw-dropping iPhone photos!

Are you looking for a photo transfer app to back up your iPhone photos to your computer? Perhaps you need to copy photos between your iPhone and iPad. Or maybe you want to share your photos to someone else’s device. There are plenty of apps for transferring your iPhone photos. But how do you decide which one to use? Read on to discover the 4 best iPhone photo transfer apps. And let us help you choose the best photo transfer app for you!

photo transfer app

1. iCloud Photos (Settings App)

Best For: Automatically transferring entire iPhone photo library to your other devices

  • Automatically copies all your iPhone photos to your other devices
  • Access all your images on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC
  • Store full-resolution images in iCloud to free up space on your phone
  • Easy to export iCloud Photos to computer hard drive for additional backup
  • iCloud Photos comes as standard on iPhone (no need for third-party photo transfer app)
  • 5GB free iCloud storage (more storage from $0.99 a month)

photo transfer app

Did you know your iPhone has built-in software for automatically transferring photos to your iPad or computer?

It’s called iCloud Photos.

iCloud Photos lets you store your images in Apple’s secure online iCloud storage. Once your photos are in iCloud, you can easily access them from your other devices.

iCloud Photos is built right into the Settings app on your iPhone. Just go to Settings > Photos, then switch on iCloud Photos.

photo transfer app

You can even use the Optimize iPhone Storage option to free up space on your phone.

Once you’ve switched on iCloud Photos, you’ll never have to think about transferring your iPhone photos again!

Your images will be synced across all your iCloud devices… including iPad, Mac, and even Windows PC.

Every time you take a new picture with your iPhone, it gets uploaded to iCloud Photos (as long as you’re on Wi-Fi).

photo transfer app

All your iPhone photos will automatically appear in the Photos app on your iPad or Mac.

And they’ll be organized in exactly the same way as they are on your iPhone.

photo transfer app

Any changes you make on one device will be reflected on your other devices. So if you delete a photo, it gets deleted from all your devices.

For this reason, you should make a regular backup of your iCloud photos. On a Mac computer, you can easily download photos from iCloud to a folder on the hard drive.

photo transfer app

If you have a Windows PC, install iCloud For Windows. Your iPhone photos will then appear in the iCloud folder on your computer.

photo transfer app

When you sign up for iCloud, Apple gives you 5GB of free cloud storage.

If you need more space for your photos, you can buy extra iCloud storage. Prices start at $0.99 a month for 50GB.

photo transfer app

iCloud Photos doesn’t allow you to control which iPhone photos get transferred. And you should still make an additional photo backup on your computer.

But it’s definitely a great feature to use if you want to access your iPhone photos on your other devices.

2. AirDrop (Photos App)

Best For: Wirelessly transferring iPhone photos to nearby Apple devices

  • Wirelessly transfer photos between nearby iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers
  • Transfer photos directly from the iPhone’s built-in Photos app
  • Quickly download iPhone photos to your Mac’s hard drive
  • Copy photos from your Mac to iPhone or iPad
  • Easily share your iPhone photos to other people’s Apple devices
  • AirDrop comes as standard in the built-in iPhone Photos app

photo transfer app

Do you want to transfer a few photos between your iPhone and Mac computer?

Perhaps you want to share your images with someone else who has an iPhone or other Apple device.

In these situations, Apple’s AirDrop feature offers a great photo transfer solution.

AirDrop lets you wirelessly transfer pictures between nearby Apple devices.

photo transfer app

That includes iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers – belonging to yourself or other people.

The AirDrop feature comes as standard in the Photos app on your iPhone. So you don’t have to download a dedicated iPhone photo transfer app.

Just ensure you have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switched on. Then go to the Photos app and select the images you want to transfer.

When you tap the Share icon at the bottom left, you’ll see any nearby Apple devices in the AirDrop section.

photo transfer app

From here, you simply tap the device you want to transfer your photos to.

You can even AirDrop photos from your Mac to other Apple devices.

This makes it easy to transfer photos from your Mac to your iPhone or iPad… or to someone else’s Apple device.

photo transfer app

AirDrop offers a quick and easy way to transfer photos from iPhone to Mac – or vice versa.

It’s also a great way to share your photos to other people’s Apple devices (as long as they’re nearby).

3. Simple Transfer App

Best For: Manually backing up your iPhone photos to computer via Wi-Fi

  • Wirelessly transfer photos between iPhone, iPad, and computer (Mac or Windows)
  • Easy to backup entire iPhone photo library to computer
  • Option to automatically delete photos after transfer to free up space on your iPhone
  • App is free to download (but only allows transfer of top 50 images in an album)
  • Upgrade to Premium version ($9.99) for unlimited transfer of images and additional features

photo transfer app

Simple Transfer is a third-party photo transfer app for iPhone, iPad, and computer.

It doesn’t sync your photos automatically between devices like iCloud Photos does. Instead, it gives you manual control over which images get transferred.

And unlike iCloud Photos, images get transferred directly to your computer’s hard drive… rather than into Apple’s cloud storage.

photo transfer app

You can choose to back up your entire iPhone photo library to your computer. Or you can import just a selection of images from your iPhone.

You can also use Simple Transfer to copy photos from your computer to your iPhone.

And you can transfer images between iOS devices (iPhone and iPad.)

photo transfer app

The Simple Transfer app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows computers.

On your computer, you can install the Simple Transfer desktop app. Or you can use a web browser to access the transfer options.

photo transfer app

The Simple Transfer app (or web browser) on your computer lets you select the images you want to download.

You can then choose which folder you want them imported to. And you have the option to delete the photos from your iPhone after downloading.

photo transfer app

The Simple Transfer app is free to download. But the free version only lets you transfer the top 50 photos in an album. And it doesn’t support the transfer of Live Photos.

For unlimited photo transfers (including Live Photos), you’ll need to upgrade to the Premium version of the app.

photo transfer app

Simple Transfer Premium costs $9.99. This is a one-off payment, and there are no additional fees or subscription charges.

4. Photo Transfer App

Best For: Transferring images to your computer directly from the iPhone Photos app

  • Wirelessly transfer photos from iPhone to computer (and vice versa)
  • Transfer images directly from the Photos app on your iPhone
  • Quickly copy images between iPhone and iPad
  • Back up all your iPhone photos to computer using the desktop app
  • App is free to download (but only allows limited transfers at medium-resolution)
  • Upgrade to Pro version ($6.99) for unlimited transfer of full-resolution images

photo transfer app

Photo Transfer App is similar to the Simple Transfer app… but with one major difference:

You can transfer images to your computer directly from the Photos app on your iPhone.

photo transfer app

So you don’t have to use the desktop app on your computer to select images for transfer. Instead, you can do it directly from your iPhone.

You still have to use your computer to choose where you want to save the photos. But using your iPhone to select and share the images makes the process more intuitive.

photo transfer app

It’s a bit like using AirDrop to transfer images straight from the Photos app on your iPhone.

But unlike AirDrop, the Photo Transfer App isn’t limited to Apple devices. It’s also compatible with Windows computers. So you can transfer photos from iPhone to PC.

photo transfer app

You can also copy photos between your iPhone and iPad. And you can easily send your photos to anyone around the world.

Backing up your entire iPhone photo library to your computer is easy with the desktop Photo Transfer App.

The desktop app also lets you transfer photos from computer to iPhone.

photo transfer app

One feature missing from this app is support for transferring Live Photos. When a Live Photo downloads to the computer, it gets converted to a still JPEG image.

If you want your Live Photos to appear as video after transferring them, use the Simple Transfer app instead. Or convert your Live Photos to video before you transfer them.

Photo Transfer App is free to download from the App Store.

photo transfer app

However, the free version only lets you transfer 10 images. And they’ll be downloaded at a lower resolution (smaller image size).

You’ll also have limited functionality within the desktop Photo Transfer App on your computer.

For unlimited image transfers at full resolution, you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro version of the app. This also gives you access to the full range of download and backup tools in the desktop app.

photo transfer app

Upgrading to the Pro version of Photo Transfer App costs $6.99 (one-off payment).

You can tap the shutter button to take a photo. Or tap Gallery to open an image from your photo library.

prisma app

When you’ve opened your photo library, locate the photo you want to edit. Then tap on the image to open it in the Prisma photo editor.

prisma app

When your photo is open, you’ll see a selection of artistic filters at the bottom of the screen.

These include a range of painting styles as well as drawing and sketch effects.

prisma app

Swipe across the filters to view more styles.

Note that the Prisma photo to painting app releases a new filter every day. So you’ll always have a new artistic style to try out.

When you find a filter you like the look of, tap to apply it to your photo.

It takes a few seconds for the Prisma app to turn your picture into a painting or drawing. The triangle icon in the middle of the screen shows the progress of the edit.

prisma app

When your photo has been processed, you’ll see the effect applied to your image.

prisma app

If you don’t like the effect, tap a different art filter at the bottom of the screen.

Keep trying different filters until you find a style that you like.

prisma app

After applying a filter, you can adjust its strength by swiping left or right over the photo. Reducing the filter strength tones down the effect for a subtler result.

prisma app

The filters at the bottom of the screen are only a small selection of Prisma’s huge range of paint and sketch styles.

prisma app

So how do you access more Prisma filters?

prisma app

Read on to find out!

2. Access More Prisma Artistic Filters

The Prisma picture to painting app has over 500 artistic filters.

prisma app

This gives you a huge range of options when it comes to choosing a paint or sketch style for your photo.

prisma app

Whatever your artistic preferences, you’re sure to find something you like!

prisma app

To view the entire collection of Prisma filters, tap Library to the left of the filters.

prisma app

Ensure the Art Styles tab is selected at the top of the screen. Then scroll down to view the different categories of filters, e.g. Daily Releases, Editor’s Picks, etc.

prisma app

Tap See More to view all of the filters within a particular category.

prisma app

When you find a filter you like the look of, tap it. Then tap Add To Favorites.

prisma app

Adding a filter to your favorites means you’ll see it at the bottom of the screen when editing your photos.

When you’ve finished adding filters to your favorites, tap Library at the top left. Then tap the X at the top left to return to the editing screen.

prisma app

The filters that you added to your favorites will appear at the bottom of the screen. You may need to scroll across to find them.

prisma app

To remove a filter from the bottom of the screen, tap and hold the filter. Then drag it to the Trash icon in the middle of the screen.

prisma app

If you remove a filter, you can always add it back to your favorites by opening the Library again.

Note that the free version of the app only gives you access to filters in the Prisma Classic and Misc Collection.

The white padlock icons indicate filters that are only available with the paid version of the app.

prisma app

If you want the entire collection of over 500 filters, you’ll need to pay for the premium version of Prisma.

Tap any padlock icon to open the subscription options.

prisma app

Premium subscription costs $7.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

You get a free 3-day trial, so you can always try it out before committing to the subscription.

prisma app

3. Fine-Tune Your Artwork With The Prisma Photo Editor

Once you’ve applied a filter to your photo, you can fine-tune the effect using the Prisma photo editor tools.

Tap the Adjustments icon (two sliders) above the row of filters.

prisma app

You’ll see a series of sliders for adjusting light, color, sharpness, etc. You can scroll down to view more adjustment sliders.

prisma app

To adjust a setting, drag the slider left or right. Watch how your photo changes as you move the slider.

prisma app

When you’re happy with the adjustments, tap the checkmark at the bottom right of the photo.

prisma app

4. Save Your Prisma Masterpiece

When you’ve finished turning your photo into artwork, you’ll need to save it to your photo library.

Tap the Share icon (square with up arrow) near the bottom right.

prisma app

On the next screen, tap Save.

prisma app

When the photo has saved, tap Cancel at the top right to return to the Prisma photo editor.

To edit another photo, tap the X near the bottom left.

prisma app

The Prisma app is free to download from the App Store. But there’s a subscription fee for accessing the app’s premium features.

Subscription costs $7.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

prisma app

The premium version of Prisma gives you access to the entire collection of over 500 filters.

But what are the other benefits of premium subscription?

prisma app

One of the key benefits is that you get unlimited HD processing.

This means the app will save your creations at full resolution, rather than reducing the image size.

prisma app

When you’re using the app, you’ll notice the SD and HD icons at the top of the screen. SD means Standard Definition and HD means High Definition.

prisma app

With the free app, you only get the option to use SD. When you save your edit, the image gets saved at a smaller size with fewer pixels than the original.

If you print or view the image at a large size, you’ll probably see some quality issues.

If you just want to have some fun with an app that turns pictures into paintings, the free Prisma app may work fine for you.

prisma app

But if you’re planning to print or share your creations, you’ll probably want to save them at the full, original size (HD).

In this case, you’ll need to subscribe to the premium version of Prisma.

To subscribe, tap the HD icon in the Prisma photo editor.

prisma app

Note that once you’ve subscribed, you’ll get the option to use SD or HD when editing. Ensure you select HD before saving so that the image saves at full size.

prisma app

One more benefit of subscribing to the Prisma app is that it’s advert-free.

So if you’re fed up of seeing adverts in the free app, you can rest assured they’ll disappear once you subscribe!

painting apps

1. Brushstroke App

Glaze is a free photo to painting app that converts your pictures into textured paintings.

painting apps

With the free version of Glaze, there are 36 painting styles to choose from.

But you can unlock more styles for an additional $2.99.

painting apps

The app also allows you to create your own presets by stacking different styles together.

Another great feature of the Glaze app is the mask tool. This lets you apply the paint effect to only certain parts of your photo.

However, to use this feature, you’ll need to pay an extra $2.99 to unlock the transparency pack.

painting apps

Many of the Glaze painting presets are strongly textured. And some of the effects will create interesting abstract images.

painting apps

You can use the Glaze paint effects on any photo. But I find it works best on pictures that have strong shapes and contrasting colors.

painting apps

If you want to create paintings with a strong texture, Glaze is the perfect photo art app.

3. Waterlogue App

painting apps

This watercolor app is incredibly simple to use.

painting apps

After applying your chosen paint style, you can change the brush size and image brightness. You can also add a white border if you wish.

painting apps

I find this app works best on landscapes, street scenes, and still life photos.

painting apps

It works particularly well on landscape photos that have a blue sky with white fluffy clouds.

painting apps

If you want to turn your photos into watercolor paintings, you can’t go wrong with Waterlogue.

It just a few seconds, this picture to painting app turns your photos into incredible works of art!

4. Portrait Painter App

The Portrait Painter app ($2.99) is designed for turning your portrait photos into stylized paintings.

painting apps

But it’s actually ideal for any type of photo.

It does a terrific job of bringing out color and contrast, as you can see in the flower picture below.

painting apps

There are over 25 different painting styles to choose from.

Styles are divided into two categories: Portrait Painter and Bright & Colorful.

painting apps

The Portrait Painter styles retain the image’s natural colors. And the Bright & Colorful styles use bold, colorful brushstrokes.

You can customize your painting using a range of settings. These include brush size, skin smoothing, color enhancement, and canvas style.

painting apps

If you want to create bold, colorful paintings on a textured canvas background, Portrait Painter is a great choice.

painting apps

Remember, you don’t need to limit yourself to portraits of people and pets. This painting style can work on many different kinds of photo.

5. Tangled FX App

The Tangled FX app ($2.99) creates a truly distinctive look.

painting apps

It turns your photos into paintings using “tangled” effects such as fibers, swirls, webs, and etching.

Tangled FX has 16 painting styles to choose from.

And you can fine-tune each style using a range of color and contrast settings.

painting apps

You can also adjust the intensity of the effect to achieve the exact look you want.
